Introduction to Burgas

Burgas (often incorrectly spelled as Bourgas) is smaller and less crowded than Varna (population 210,260). It is Bulgaria's largest port and this is the primary focus of the city.

Burgas has a relaxed atmosphere with good shopping and an abundance of restaurants and outdoor cafes.

History & Landmarks

History: Burgas is a successor of the late Roman small town called Deultum founded by Emperor Vespasian as a military colony for veterans. Later it was called Develt, which served as a name for the present day village of Debelt. Three more villages were included in the present day territory of the city, i.e. Kastiacion, Skafida and Rossokastron. Later a curative settlement was built called Aqua kalidae, arranged like Asclepionite around the mineral springs well known in the area. Thracian tribes lived here before the commencement of this construction work. The glory of the adjacent towns did not allow small fortresses to expand. In the Middle Ages a small fortress called Pirgos was erected, most probably used as a watch-tower in Bulgarian territories.

It was only in 17th century that Bourgas was given its present name and its location as it is now was determined. It was called Ahelo-Bourgas. After the Liberation it was called Bourgas, and was a small settlement with 2950 inhabitants. Ever since the town has grown and the population has increased almost 100 times. It became the centre of the Southern Black Sea coast, a city of well developed industry and trade, with a busy harbour. A number of plants, oil and chemical works producing more than 30 oil products for the country, were built; there was rapid agricultural development on the land by the city; salt and iron are mined in industrial quantities and trades far beyond the boundaries of the country. In 1903 the railway station in Bourgas started functioning.

Landmarks: The District Museum of History was founded in 1925 with the archaeological association. Today it houses an archaeological hall with a rich collection from the old colonies on the Black Sea coast. There are a number of ceramic vessels, objects from everyday life, coins and jewellery from antiquity, tombstones, plates of Thracian horse-riders, tools, and miniature models of ancient settlements. There are exhibits of modern history, photos of Revival eminent leaders, of Bulgarians born in the district having blazed a trail in the history of the native land.

The Art Gallery was established in 1945 with halls exhibiting foreign art, works of Bulgarian artists, and icons painted by Revival icon-painters.

The Sea Park is situated on a high shore, all of it cut by flowerbeds, trees and sculptures.

There is the bust of Adam Mizcewic, Polish writer and revolutionary, who stayed in the city in 1850.
Within the park there is the casino, a small zoo and the open-air theatre, which houses the annual International Folklore Festival, and where part of the guests at the Golden Orpheus Pop-Festival perform.

The central beach is situated below the Sea Park, a beautiful forked staircase in verdure leads to the beach. The sand is a mixture of various alloys of magnetite which are the reason for its dark colour. The city has a northern beach, too, close to the Izgrev Quarter, adjacent to the salt-mines.

The St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is situated near the marketplace, and is interesting for its marvelous frescos and wooden altar.
The Ethnographic Museum has an interesting collection of traditional masks of koukeri, and costumes typical of the region, objects from everyday life, and ritual accessories. There is a video-hall where one can see ethnographic and historical films. A number of traditional Bulgarian fabrics and embroidery typical of the district are exhibited. The museum is arranged in a house from 1873, later declared a cultural monument.

The Museum of Nature and Science contains many exhibits describing the geological characteristics of the earth, the region, the flora and fauna. More than 1200 exhibits relating to insects and reptiles have been exposed. More than 140 species of fishes, plants growing in the district of Strandzha, protected and endemic species are on display.

The Philharmonic, the Opera House, and the Theatre of Drama are housed in three different buildings and function all through the season. Together with the Puppet Theatre they outline the cultural atmosphere in the city with their interesting concerts and performances. An interesting sight of Bourgas is the Armenian Church located close to the Bulgaria Hotel. It was built in 1855 by the local Armenian minority supported by Bulgarians.

Accommodation: The city has many hotels of different categories, many private lodgings, there are two big camping sites in the proximity of Bourgas. The most famous hotels are Park Hotel, situated on the shore of Atanassovo Lake, deluxe category; Primorets Hotel; Bulgaria Hotel and Cosmos Hotel. Most expensive among them is the Bulgaria Hotel, the cheapest accommodation is found in the private hotels in the suburbs.

Catering: The city is full of restaurants, pubs, beer-houses, taverns, and refreshment stalls and grocer’s shops. The most famous restaurants are National, Staryat Pristan (the Old Pier), Starata Gemiya (the Old Boat), Bourgaska Sreshta (Meeting in Bourgas), as well as the restaurants at the hotels. Most of the luxury restaurants have orchestras playing, some offer entertainment, too. As a rule the food in the city is cheap, especially if one shops in the suburbs or at the marketplaces. The practical tourists may use the services of the traditional bakeries, pizza houses, and self-service establishments.

Transport: Bourgas Airport is open for flights from the country and abroad through the year. One can receive information and book tickets on tel.: 056 684083; the booking agency in the city has the following tel.: 056 45605. There are flights to Sofia every day, and during the summer there are up to 7 flights in the day in both directions. The flight to the capital city takes 40 min. The telephone of the railway station is 056 45022; booking office at tel.: 056 47023. The railway station in Bourgas has connections with all main directions round the country. The express train to Sofia travels less than 6.30 hours; it takes 3 hours to get to Plovdiv. Reservation in a sleeping car should be made at least a week earlier during the summer. The bus station is located next to the railway station, the telephone there is 056 24047. Buses in many directions including Sofia start from there. There are a lot of private carriers to the south and to the north of Bourgas to the towns and resorts situated some about 50 km away from the centre. The buses of the Group Company travel in various directions outside the country, too (tel.: 056 45360 for reservations). One can rent a bicycle at the corner of Mihailov Str. and Kirkov Str. There is regular city transport - buses, trolley-buses and route taxis.

Surrounding areas: The lake of Pomorie is located 20 km north of Bourgas and is surrounded by salt-mines and balneo-resorts. Atanassovo Lake is to the north, too, between the airport and the city. It is 10 km long and is a nestling site of many marsh and sea birds migrating from Gibraltar and the Bosphorus. Part of the lake is a biosphere reserve; bulrush and cane grow here, there are sites for fishing, swimming and having a rest. Bourgas Lake is a nestling site of numerous pelicans, ibis, and herons. It offers many opportunities for having a rest as well. Mandren Lake is 10 km south of the city and is also an important ornithological reserve with a large bird population in summers. Small lagoons have been formed in it; it is appropriate for rowing tours and recreation. The lake is close to the road to Sozopol.

St. Anastassia Island is 3 nautical miles east of the city. There is a well-preserved old church. The name of the island is associated with the exile of left-wing revolutionaries in 1923-1925, and of anti-Fascists in 1943-1944. That is why for some time after 1944 the island bore the name Bolshevik.

The salt-mines of Bourgas are a sight of interest. They border the Bourgas Lake, and some of them even stretch to the Atanassovo Lake. The mineral public baths are 13 km north-west of the city in the direction to Aitos. There are the remains of the old Roman town called Aetos built round the mineral springs. The settlement near the baths was called Terma, Termopolis, Megaliterma. In 16th century a Turkish hamam (bath) were erected; it is still existing and functioning. There is curing mud, a balneo-spa, a resort polyclinic, and a rest home.

The village of Kraimorie (old name Kafka) is to the south of Bourgas on the way to the old fortress of Pirgos. There is a nice beach near the village, as well as rest homes and private lodgings for the holiday-makers. The Otmanli Park is 15 km away from Bourgas near Cape Choukalya. It is situated in a thick forest on a territory of 6000 decares. There is a hunting reservation and bungalows for recreation.

This large Bulgarian city is often bypassed by those looking to head straight for the coast. However, for those who stop and spend a little time in Bourgas the area proves to be a bit of a surprise. Family:	The nearby resorts offer much to keep children fully occupied for hours on end. A trip to the seaside is always a treat for the kids and excellent local transport links mean that sea and sand are never too far away.

The park is situated on a hill next to the coast, and is rich in flowers, trees and sculptures. Within the park there is a casino, a small zoo and an open-air theatre, which houses the annual International Folklore Festival, and where participants in the Golden Orpheus Pop-Festival perform.

The St. Anastassia Island

The St. Anastassia Island is situated six kilometres east of the city. There is a well - preserved old church on the island, which impresses with its architecture style.

Atanasovo lake

Atanasovsko Lake is situated to the north of the town of Bourgas. It is a hyperhaline coastal lake. The nature around is incredible - charming greenery, fresh air, great diversity of flora and fauna. Many of the plant and animal species are under protection. This is the major reason for the establishment of a national reserve on this territory (its northern part). Its southern part is a buffer zone. The Atanasovsko lake is a salt lake. Salt has been produced here since 1906.
More than 233 plant species are found in the lake’s area. The most typical ones are the Glasswort, Broadleaf Bulrush, Black Sea Lavender.
Atanasovsko Lake is one of the richest areas in Bulgaria from ornithological point of view. Over 300 bird species occur in the area of all 400 species found in Bulgaria. Twelve of these 300 species are globally endangered: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Red-breasted Goose and Corncrake. Seventeen bird species breeding in Atanasovsko Lake are listed in Bulgaria’s Red Book: Avocet, Tern, Little Tern, Mediterranean Gull, Slender-billed Tern. Atanasovsko Lake is situated on the migratory flyway Via Pontica which determines the wide variety of breeding species. The largest number of birds is usually observed during the fall migration.
The smallest mammal living in Europe, the Shrew, is also an inhabitant of the lake. Other rare mammals occurring in the lake’s area are the European Otter, the European Wild Cat, Vole. Atanasovsko Lake is the northernmost habitat of this species.

The Ethnographic museum

The ethnographic exposition is arranged in an originally constructed house, a monument of culture, known as Brakalovata. It is situated next to another building of interest in the town – the Svetite Kiril I Metodiyi Church. That exhibition is dedicated to the life style and folklore of the local inhabitants at the end of the 19-th and the beginning of the 20-th century – textile, costumes, decorations, ritual cloths, ceramic, houseware. The museum offers the tourist the possibility to see the Nestinarka rite /dancing on live ember/ in Bulgari village or to visit a museum collection in Brashlyan village.

Art Gallery

The Art Gallery of Bourgas ranks among one of the oldest in Bulgaria. It is located in the former Jewish synagogue, a remarkable architectural monument built in the period from 1905 to 1910 by Ricardo Toscani, an Italian architect. It was originally founded in 1945 with the joint participation of prominent public figures, artists and artistic circles. “The Picture Gallery and Museum” was ceremoniously opened in the Stock Exchange Hall of the Chamber of Commerce on April 7th,1947. At that time the inventory of the Gallery comprised 58 paintings and 6 sculptures. In the years that followed, the number of art objects increased considerably from numerous individual and joint exhibitions.
From September 1966 on, the Art Gallery was permanently set up in the building of the Jewish synagogue which had been revamped for that purpose accordingly.
Nowadays, the exhibition is set up on three floors and displays the best of its treasure stock comprising more than 2500 works of art - paintings, sculptures and fine art. The central place is allotted to the pictures of Bencho Obreshkov, Tzeno Todorov, Nikola Marinov, Zlatyu Boyadjiev, Stoyan Velev, Mara Tzoncheva, Assen Vassilev, Dechko Uzunov, Vassil Stoilov, Svetlin Roussev, etc.The exhibition hall on the second floor displays the achievements of Bourgas artists throughout this century. Here one can find the works of Gencho Mitev, Pavel Valkov, Petar Zadgorski, Georgi Baev, Kiril Simeonov and many others. The seascape of Bourgas reflected in their pictures creates a unique atmosphere and style of expression.
The Art Gallery boasts a most valuable icon collection from the Strandja Mountain, dating from the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The icon collection displays the idiosyncratic nature of the spiritual life and culture in that region, which has preserved its national originality under severe historical conditions. The icons of St. Ilija (17th c.), John the Baptist (17th c.), St. George (18th c.), Bogoroditza Odigidria (17th c.) stand out among many others. The names of several iconographers have been deciphered - Zakhary Zograph, Dimitar Zograph, Todor Zograph from Hios. Today the Art Gallery of Bourgas is an important cultural centre of the city. It is a popular venue for delivering lectures, holding meetings with famous artists, recitals, chamber concerts, etc. It boasts a good number of visitors, both from the country and abroad.

The Archaeological museum

It was opened in 1925 by the Debelt Archaeological Society. The museum prides itself on a rich collection of precious archaeological finds dating back from the end the 6-th millenium BC to the 15-th century AC. The exposition is arranged in a house – a monument of culture – the first intermediate secondary school in the country. There is a rich collection of antique and medieval anchors from the Mediterranean, preserved ancient wooden boats, numismatic, sphragistic, epigraphical and other collections.

Museum of Nature and Science

History of the Museum
In 1951 the Fishing and Hunting Association in Bourgas town opens a temporary exhibit, consisting of 600 exponents: minerals, fossils, birds and mammals. In 1974 as a result of a botanical expedition to Strandja and Sakar Mountains and Black Sea coast the collection of exhibits enlarges with vertebrates. On 23.05.1985 the Museum of Nature and Science was officially opened.

Exhibition The exhibition of the museum is situated in 6 halls and illustrates the natural opulence of Burgas and the region. The collection consists of 1700 exponents, 102 pictures and 299 drawings and maps that reveal the unique flora of Strandja and the rich variety of birds along the Black Sea coast. These natural resources are described as a result of the geohistorical development of the region and the influence of the basic ecological factors and man. The actual bio diversity is presented as a consequence of evolution.

Departments
The exhibition of the museum comprises 4 departments:
DEPARTMENT “GEOLOGY” The geohistorical development and the climate characteristics of the region are described there. The main deposits of the materials are the Black Sea coast, Strandja Mountain, East part of the Stara Planina, and the plain of the Bourgas region. It includes rocks and minerals from Archaic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era and rocks and fossils from Neozoic Era. There are also over 40 kinds of palaeontological exhibits, mostly mollusc.
DEPARTMENT “BOTANY” Flora of the seacoasts, marshlands and longoz territories, as well as broad leaves forests and protected species of Strandja and the Black Sea coast are exhibited.
DEPARTMENT “INVERTEBRATES” The collection consists of over 1000 species: protozoa, terrestrial animals, freshwater, sea and arthropod mollusca, crabs, scorpions and insects. DEPARTMENT “VERTEBRATES” The collection includes over 320 animal species, arranged in a systematic way according to the evolution of the food rage: sea fish, terrestrial animals and reptiles living in forests, bushes and marshlands, birds and mammals.

Bourgas Lake

Bourgas Lake is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria, with an area of 27.60 square km. The lake is inhabited by a wide variety of species, including 60 fish, 60 invertebrates and 254 bird species (of which 61 endangered in Bulgaria). It is a nestling site of numerous pelicans, ibis, and herons.

Ethnographic Museum

Exposition: it presents the living conditions and culture of the population in the region at the end of the 19th beginning of the 20th c. It is displayed in Brakalov’s house. Brakalov was a Revival activist, Vassil Levski’s brother-in-arms. He was twice a mayor of Bourgas during the 19thc.
Highlights: he biggest collection of costumes, fabrics and adornments from the Strandzha ethnographic group - Ruptsi. Collection of costumers of the village of Bulgari. Unique collection presenting “Enyo’s Bride“ custom - Enyo’s Day in Strandzha.

Poda Nature Centre

This is one of the best Nature Centres in Bulgaria. The building is situated at the south end of Bourgas, on the main road to Sozopol and Malko Tarnovo. There is a good permanent exhibition. In case you are interested, a qualified guide could introduce you to the nature of that region. You can watch the birds around from the balcony on the second floor or just take a tour around. There is a tour around the lakes after the presentation. The shop has some postcards and souvenirs.

Mineral Water Baths

The Pomorie Lake

Hyperhaline naturally formed lagoon with a surface area of 850 ha The lake’s water great salinity has determined the presence of specific plant and animal species Its greatest asset is its ornithological wealth.

This is the northernmost of all Bourgas lakes. It is a hyperhaline naturally formed lagoon and is situated in closest vicinity to the town of Pomorie, separated from the sea by a sand bar and a manmade dike. There is a canal in its southern part connecting the lake with the Black sea. The lake surface area is 850 ha but together with the surrounding wetlands adds up to about 1000 ha. Its shape is one of the elongated oval the length of it along the long axis being 6.7 km and the average width being about 2 km. In the southern part of the lake medicinal mud is excavated while its northern part has been turned into salt works.

The lake's water great salinity has determined the presence of specific plant and animal species: Glasswort, Sea Wormwood, Sea Blite, Caucasian Goby (a species of fish that can stand up to 80 promils water salinity), the Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina – an important component of the birds diet). Some rare plants listed in Bulgaria's Red Book like the Black Sea Campion, the Water Lily (Nymphaea alba), and others also occur there.

PODA Lagoon

In the past the lagoon formed a part of the Bourgas -Mandra firth. Later it became the easternmost end of the Mandra lake. Located immediately to the city limits of Bourgas on the seaward side of the road to Sozopol, it covers an area of slightly over 100 ha. Today on its relatively small area a rich variety of habitats has formed: freshwater, brackish, hyperhaline – each providing specific living confitions to different creatures.

Poda Lagoon has been declared a protected site in 1989. It was the first nature protected area in Bulgaria consigned to an NGO – the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds – for management. Within the site boundaries the following biodiversity richness has been found: 161 taxa of lower plants, 231 sp. of vascular plants, 168 sp. of invertebrate animals, 6 sp. of fish, 14 sp. of amphibians & reptiles, 240 sp. of birds and 15 sp. of mammals....

The Burgas Lakes

The Burgas Lakes (Bulgarian: Бургаски езера, Burgaski ezera) or Burgas Wetlands (Бургаски влажни зони, Burgaski vlazhni zoni) are a group of coastal lakes of varying saltiness located around the Bulgarian city of Burgas in the proximity of the Black Sea. They constitute the largest group of lakes in the country and comprise some of Bulgaria's biggest and most important lakes.
The lakes' total area (including swamps, marshes, ponds and other reservoirs) amounts to 95 km², of which 33.30 km² are either proclaimed or proposed protected areas that are inhabited by a large number of locally or globally endangered species of birds, fish and mammals. Apart from this, the Burgas Lakes are also of economic importance, used to obtain sea salt and curative mud, as well as to supply the local economy with fresh water, in the case of Lake Mandrensko.

Lake Mandrensko

Lake Mandrensko or Lake Mandra (Мандренско езеро) is the southernmost of the Burgas Lakes, located in the immediate proximity of the Black Sea and close to Burgas. Being 8 km long and 1.3 km wide at maximum, as well as having an area of 38.84 km², it was a brackish natural lake until 1963, when it was turned into a reservoir with the construction of a dam to secure fresh water for the large Neftochim Burgas oil refinery. The rivers Izvorska, Fakiyska, Sredetska and Rusokastrenska flow into the lake.
Parts of Lake Mandrensko are designated protected areas inhabited by a number of locally and globally endangered species of fish and birds.

The Adriana Budevska Drama Theatre

The Adriana Budevska Drama Theatre is named after one of the best-known Bulgarian theater actresses. In its long history it has given to Bulgaria an invaluable array of names of great directors, actors and stage managers. The Bourgas theater is one of the town’s brightest symbols and part of its magic appeal. Theoretically the active season in Bourgas runs from October to May, but in practice it is an on-going affair all the year round, with a lot of the national cultural life events moving to the resort centers over the summer. The Bourgas theater runs shows both on its own stage, and on the stage of the Opera House. Touring shows are hosted by the halls of the Garrison Military Club and the Neftochim Cultural Home.
