Museum of Nature and Science

History of the Museum
In 1951 the Fishing and Hunting Association in Bourgas town opens a temporary exhibit, consisting of 600 exponents: minerals, fossils, birds and mammals. In 1974 as a result of a botanical expedition to Strandja and Sakar Mountains and Black Sea coast the collection of exhibits enlarges with vertebrates. On 23.05.1985 the Museum of Nature and Science was officially opened.

Exhibition The exhibition of the museum is situated in 6 halls and illustrates the natural opulence of Burgas and the region. The collection consists of 1700 exponents, 102 pictures and 299 drawings and maps that reveal the unique flora of Strandja and the rich variety of birds along the Black Sea coast. These natural resources are described as a result of the geohistorical development of the region and the influence of the basic ecological factors and man. The actual bio diversity is presented as a consequence of evolution.

Departments
The exhibition of the museum comprises 4 departments:
DEPARTMENT “GEOLOGY” The geohistorical development and the climate characteristics of the region are described there. The main deposits of the materials are the Black Sea coast, Strandja Mountain, East part of the Stara Planina, and the plain of the Bourgas region. It includes rocks and minerals from Archaic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era and rocks and fossils from Neozoic Era. There are also over 40 kinds of palaeontological exhibits, mostly mollusc.
DEPARTMENT “BOTANY” Flora of the seacoasts, marshlands and longoz territories, as well as broad leaves forests and protected species of Strandja and the Black Sea coast are exhibited.
DEPARTMENT “INVERTEBRATES” The collection consists of over 1000 species: protozoa, terrestrial animals, freshwater, sea and arthropod mollusca, crabs, scorpions and insects. DEPARTMENT “VERTEBRATES” The collection includes over 320 animal species, arranged in a systematic way according to the evolution of the food rage: sea fish, terrestrial animals and reptiles living in forests, bushes and marshlands, birds and mammals.
